Pet of the Week: Ahsoka

Listen and learn my padawan* – here is Ahsoka, our Pet of the Week!

This German Shepherd girl was brought in by her previous owner in December because she was having some medical issues that needed to be addressed. Ahsoka lived in a home with another big dog and older children, and her previous owner described her as shy, anxious, loving, and protective.

Ahsoka is a very smart dog – she already knows all the basics: sit, stay, come, down, and shake.

Because she is a strong-willed and independent dog who likes to do her own thing, Ahsoka is one of our “Rambunctious Red” pets. Ahsoka would benefit from some structured obedience training to help her to be the best dog possible. She tends to get overwhelmed easily, so she would prefer a quiet and calm home so that she can feel safe and comfortable.

Caregivers at the Pet Adoption Center have noticed that Ahsoka seems to do well with other large dogs, but she has a very high prey drive and should not be around small animals. Ahsoka also tends to resource guard her spaces, such as vehicles, couches, beds, and other furniture. She and her new family would both benefit from in-home training to help improve this behavior.

Ahsoka has been diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). EPI is a disease present at birth where the pancreas does not produce sufficient pancreatic enzymes to digest food. This difficulty in digestion leads to poor absorption of nutrients which commonly causes weight loss and diarrhea. EPI can be managed by adding supplemental enzymes to her food before every meal. Dogs with EPI typically do well with treatment, but will need to be on the supplements for life. Ahsoka comes with an information handout about this condition.

Ahsoka is spayed, current on vaccinations, and microchipped. Her adoption includes a free visit to the veterinarian of your choice and 30 days of opt-in pet insurance through Trupanion. Since she is our Pet of the Week, along with all the other perks included in her adoption, Ahsoka’s adoption fee has been waived! However, a pet license is a requirement and therefore a fee may be applied. This helps her safe return home should she become lost, and comes with additional benefits such as Vacation Pet Alert, Free Ride Home, and more.
