2019 April Volunteer of the Month: Pati and Luke
Meet Pati and Luke! RASKC is very happy to honor Pati Ramos and Luke West. They are terrific foster volunteers, who have contributed over 1,000 hours each year for the past three years, totalling over 4,375 hours donated so far since 2016. Pati and Luke are super friendly and regularly attend RASKC’s Springtime Annual Foster Celebration. Pati has helped other animal organizations too. She served as Co-Chair of the Sabbath Memorial Dog Rescue in Florida. She has volunteered for the Miami Humane Society, the Atlanta Humane Society, and Planned PEThood. Thank you, Pati and Luke!
Q: How did you hear about RASKC? Q: How did you hear about RASKC?
A: We were looking for cat volunteering opportunities, so we went to see the shelters near Seattle.
Q: What made you want to volunteer, especially to work with animals?
A: We’ve both always loved animals and wanted to have many pets. We jumped into working with animals when a cat gave birth to kittens on our porch in our college house. It made us realize there was a lot we could be doing to help, and it taught us our love for slightly wild cats.
Q: What do you do when you aren’t volunteering at RASKC?
A: We own a long-term bike rental business called Pedal Anywhere. It gives us a lot of work and also a lot of time flexibility to work with cats.
Q: What have you gained and hope to gain from your experience as a volunteer with RASKC?
A: I’ve learned enormous amounts- not only about cats, but also from them. I’ve learned how to be patient and try to listen, especially when they’re speaking a different language. I hope that I learn better communication skills and how to understand what they need me from during the 3am meowing session.
Q: What’s the best thing about your cats?
A: When my cats greet me when I come home, usually looking like they just woke up.
Q: How would you describe your pets’ personalities?
A: Momo loves us an overwhelming amount and will purr like a truck when we come near. He was born a feral. Some things are hard to forget, so if other people come near him, he acts tough. Momo is incredibly smart and loves doing tricks for treats or for his favorite thing- attention.
Rockstar is super sweet and silly. She is always excited for a good lap and will sing in the mornings for her wet food. Rockstar plays on her terms and prefers lounging or catnip to performing for humans.
Q: What else would you like to say about volunteering for RASKC?
A: We have had nothing but great experiences with RASKC. We have always felt very supported, and we love the team.
